To Whom It May Concern,

I’m currently working towards my MA degree in Education with a concentration in Sports Leadership and Coaching. I hope to utilize my formal education to provide youth with a positive and successful educational experience. Through my coursework I have filled my tool box of teaching methods and approaches while gaining an understanding of various student needs.

While finishing up my education, I have taken on a role as a substitute teacher with Madill Public Schools I have worked as a long-term substitute teacher in a third grade class where I have been able to apply concepts from my education while also enhancing my previous teaching skills. Switching from teaching high school to elementary has taught me to be flexible, adaptive, and quick-thinking. I have learned to follow a curriculum pacing guide while adapting lesson plans to my own teaching style and the needs of my students. I have also gained experience with early elementary reading preventative programs.

I completed my undergraduate education through Michigan State University. I pursued a degree in Environmental Studies and Agriscience with a concentration in education and a minor in Biology. I completed a year of student teaching upon completion of my bachelor’s degree. Through this education I have gained the ability to instruct a variety of learning types, ensuring the best chances of everyone understanding the information being passed along. By student teaching for a full year I gained the skills necessary for a successful teacher. I enhanced my classroom management, organization, lesson planning, methods for engaging students, ability to differentiate instruction, and more.

I have past experience working with at risk youth through my service term as an AmeriCorp member at Edgewood Village. While at Edgewood I served as the youth programs coordinator, focusing my role on gardening and nutrition education programs. Through my time at Edgewood I developed many different skills that would be beneficial to performing the tasks required of an educator. I developed different methods for engaging and instructing students of extremely diverse backgrounds. I also honed my teamwork skills through many gardening meetings that focused on working together to better the community garden at Edgewood.

I am very interested in a position with your school and I look forward to hearing from you. Please don’t hesitate with any questions.

Respectfully yours,

Lindsey Kappen
